چکیده

We prove a general form of ‘free-cut elimination’ for first-order theories in linear logic, yielding normal forms of proofs where cuts are anchored to nonlogical steps. To demonstrate the usefulness of this result, we consider a version of arithmetic in linear logic, based on a previous axiomatisation by Bellantoni and Hofmann. We prove a witnessing theorem for a fragment of this arithmetic via the ‘witness function method’, showing that the provably convergent functions are precisely the polynomial-time functions. The programs extracted are implemented in the framework of ‘safe’ recursive functions, due to Bellantoni and Cook, where the ! modality of linear logic corresponds to normal inputs of a safe recursive program. 1998 ACM Subject Classification F.4.1 Mathematical Logic

Contraction-free sequent calculi for geometric theories with an application to Barr's theorem

Geometric theories are presented as contractionand cut-free systems of sequent calculi with mathematical rules following a prescribed rule-scheme that extends the scheme given in Negri and von Plato (1998). Examples include cut-free calculi for Robinson arithmetic and real closed fields. As an immediate consequence of cut elimination, it is shown that if a geometric implication is classically d...

Arithmetic as a Theory Modulo

We present constructive arithmetic in Deduction modulo with rewrite rules only. In natural deduction and in sequent calculus, the cut elimination theorem and the analysis of the structure of cut free proofs is the key to many results about predicate logic with no axioms: analyticity and non-provability results, completeness results for proof search algorithms, decidability results for fragments...

The Cut-Elimination Theorem for Differential Nets with Promotion

Recently Ehrhard and Regnier have introduced Differential Linear Logic, DiLL for short — an extension of the Multiplicative Exponential fragment of Linear Logic that is able to express non-deterministic computations. The authors have examined the cut-elimination of the promotion-free fragment of DiLL by means of a proofnet-like calculus: differential interaction nets. We extend this analysis to...

On the form of witness terms

We investigate the development of terms during cut-elimination in first-order logic and Peano arithmetic for proofs of existential formulas. The form of witness terms in cut-free proofs is characterized in terms of structured combinations of basic substitutions. Based on this result, a regular tree grammar computing witness terms is given and a class of proofs is shown to have only elementary c...

Clausal Analysis of First-order Proof Schemata

Proof schemata are a variant of LK-proofs able to simulate various induction schemes in first-order logic by adding so called proof links to the standard first-order LK-calculus. Proof links allow proofs to reference proofs thus giving proof schemata a recursive structure. Unfortunately, applying reductive cutelimination is non-trivial in the presence of proof links. Borrowing the concept of la...
